Welcome to the website for both the SW Burley Tobacco Scholarship and the Southside Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Programs sponsored by the VA Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission and administered by the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. The members of the VA Tobacco Commission awarded a total of $5.225 million to these programs for the 2011-2012 funding cycle – $1.375 million for the Southwest Burley Tobacco Scholarship Program and $3.85 million for the Southside Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Program. Applicants must live in the counties listed for either the S Southwest Burley Tobacco Scholarship Program OR the Southside Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Program.
NO ONE CAN ENTER AN APPLICATION FOR BOTH PROGRAMS.
Applicants must be a U. S. National or a legal resident of the United States who has lived in one of the named localities and in the state of Virginia for no less than 12 months. The Southwest Burley Tobacco Scholarship Program is a grant program while the Southside Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Program carries the stipulation that an award recipient will return to the Southside VA region after graduation and become gainfully employed in order to receive forgiveness for the assistance received. Once an application has been entered, applicants can view their data by Creating an Account under the APPLICANT PORTAL heading. Once an account is created, the applicant can view and change the profile information as well as view the date documents were received, and the amounts paid along with the date of the payment.
